Hi 👋, my name is Ben, and I'm a designer based in the Netherlands, with a background in software engineering. During my career, I realized I was drawn more toward design than software. Currently, I'm moving towards becoming a visual designer.

approach

When faced with a challenge I tend to break it down into something digestible. Then I build systems that helps me express these learnings. My analytical nature makes me ask why something is the way it is. Because design challenges move between different levels, I make sure context and insights don't get lost.

That's why I want to create a space for others where design becomes inclusive and approachable, instead of being complex and exclusive. I usually make use of generative sessions or storytelling to clear the fog of a challenge. If I can make someone in the project feel comfortable designing as well, I have achieved my goal.

As a designer, I shape things so that people understand their problems, things flow naturally, and most importantly that complexity feels lighter. The way I design for someone comes first, adding my own personal touch comes second.

practice

All of my work follows a similar journey, just with different destinations. I look for structure that allows me to build something coherent, like I do with digital interfaces. Narrative helps in clearing up fog and inviting people into different environments, which shows up in areas like my editorial work. And I explore different textures, materials, and details that provide expression like in physical media.

No matter the medium, the same approach applies. I still tend to pick apart systems, build them up, and look for the human aspect. This creates a space where others can join the process or interact with the work.

At the moment I’m moving into the visual design space, focusing on strengthening my graphic and visual design practice. I’m looking for an environment surrounded by other designers, where collaboration is part of the work. That’s where I grow, by contributing to real projects and learning alongside others.
